WHAT IS BSFCN?
An innovative organization of parents of Black students, families and others from the Black Community developed to provide communication about Howard County resources available to the families of Black students.
PURPOSE
To facilitate the involvement of Black students, their families and the community in positive collaboration with the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), community individuals, institutions and organizations that assist in equipping Black students to be successful and excel in their education and in life.
To promote and facilitate educational, financial, and other programs which support the success and development of Black students, their families and the community.
GOALS
To promote awareness and provide communication about the HCPSS resource such as:
• Educational and cultural programs
• Classes for students and parents
• Training (leadership, advocacy, empowerment)
• Volunteer opportunities
• Notices of government hearings, general activities, resource groups
To provide communication about Howard County community resources, especially Black community resources such as:
• Educational, cultural, recreational programs
• Mentoring programs
• Employment opportunities
• Scholarships
BENEFITS
Provides information and referral service to Parents of Black Students on available resources:
• Howard County Public School System (“Mysteries of HCPSS” – Gifted and Talented G/T Program, Career Academies)
• The Black Community (Churches, businesses and organizations)
• General Community (Churches, businesses and organizations)
• Workshops (“Empowering You (Parents) to be your Child’s Advocate”, Grade Specific Topics)
HISTORY
BSFCN initially called the “Parent Involvement Committee”, evolved from a workshop sponsored by The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County (TCOE) on Community Support for Parents. This workshop was a part of the first TCOE Summit on Achievement of Black Students in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS). TCOE continues to support and guide BSFCN in their pursuit to support black students, their families and the community.
